According to a family document a certain Hadži Nikola Selak was the first tourist who built his cottage in Vodice in 175O. Later many important personalities were spending their holidays on this marvelous mountain (for instance the Duke Miloš Obrenović).
The arrival of King Aleksandar Obrenovic to Kulaševac in 1893, when the place got its new name "Kraljeve Vode",is considered to be the official beginning of tourism on Zlatibor.
At the beginning of this century there were only a couple of private summer houses (vila) mostly owned by well-to-do people from Užice, but after the year 1927 by opening the first bus line Užice - Kraljeva Voda, construction of new houses, restaurants and inns with rooms for renting started.
Side by side to Kraljeve Vode also Palisad was developing, where the tourist objects were being built mostly by people from Belgrade.
There is an interesting data that 196O native and foreign guests were staying on Zlatibor in the year 1939. Up to the beginning of world war II there were 34 tourist objects built
for vacation and convalescence on Zlatibor.

At the end of last century already a plan existed on Zlatibor to bild a sanatorium where people with lung deseases primarily would be treated and rehabilitated.
Medical researches showed out that Zlatibor environment is convenient for keeping health and condition of healthy people, as well as for healing various lung diseases, anemia, neurastenia, minor disorders of the heart and blood vessels,
and especially disorders of the thyroid gland (The Institut for Thyroid Gland and Metabolism "Zlatibor").

One of the aspects of health tourism is also the popular "Čigota programme", a special fittness programme, intended for people with increased body weight, as well as for those, who wish to avoid it and preserve health and good looks.

One of most common aspects of tourism is by all means the recreational one. You'll often meet people strolling on one of numerous walking paths (a walk to the Monument, to Čigota, to the canyon of Rzav, to Oka, Crni Vrh, Ribničko jezero...), or researching the beauties of Zlatibor in some other way.

The Open Air Museum "Old Village" Sirogojno, a museum of traditional folk architecture, is bringing us back to the period of 19 -th century. In the year 1979 the Republic Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments, and the former enterprise "Sirogojno" revived the Zlatibor homestead  (on the area of 4,5 hectares) with all of its elements: a house, a cottage ("vajat"), a guest house, a dairy, a bakery, a pen, a corn, a grain, a crib, a sleeping hut...
In the museum programmes special attention is payed to preserving and recuperating of traditional trades. In the museum workshops copies of museum exhibits are being made and one can see the skills of potter's, cooper's, carpenter's, weawer's and other trades.
During the season art, literary, music and other meetings are organized, as well as
exhibitions, l ectures and summer schools. A small theatre was built to suit the needs
and architecture of the museum. There are special shops where products of old trades and copies of some traditional handicraft, medicinal herbs and teas....are being sold. One of the old houses has been transformed into a tavern and some smaller buildings are intended for living there.
